Join us! on Wednesday, October 17, 2018 from 9  a.m. - 3:15 p.m. at Sun Prairie Media Center in Sun Prairie, Wisconsin.

Continental Breakfast will be served at 8:30 a.m.

As community media professionals, we seek to make our centers as responsive -- and as accessible -- to our communities as possible.  In this year's Wisconsin Community Media Fall Workshop, we are covering three ways local media centers are enhancing their accessibility:

  • Using Closed Captioning to make programming more accessible to hearing-impaired audiences.

  • Using LPFM Radio to reach new audiences and producers and to promote videos released on the web and on cable.

  • Managing Media Centers to be more open and welcoming to current and potential community producers.

Daniell Krawczyk

We are excited to have a special guest speaker this year, Daniell Krawczyk, President of Municipal Captioning, who will be explaining and answering questions about closed captioning technical configurations.  Daniell just completed an exhaustive study of the captioning options currently on the market.

Jeff Robbins, Director, Sun Prairie Media Center
, will discuss how SPMC has made room for and found new fans through its low power FM radio station.

A panel of seven access managers, who all manage centers with an active volunteer community producer base, will discuss their strategies:  Tom Loucks, Wisconsin Rapids Community Media; Scott Mealiff, WSCS Sheboygan; Jason Rimkus, Kenosha Community Media; Heather Rigby, Valley Media Works, Eau Claire; Jeff Robbins, Sun Prairie Media Center; and Jake Timm, Oshkosh Media.

Bi-Annual Membership Meeting

Whether you are a member of WCM or not, you are welcome to come and find out more about WCM by attending our bi-annual Membership Meeting.  Bi-annual meetings were begun in 2016 in response to a need for more interaction with members.  These face-to-face gatherings allow the WCM Board and Committees to explain what they are doing, gather ideas, refine priorities, and develop more effective action plans.

After luncheon reports, we will break into five small groups to discuss current projects.  Each table will be led by the chair of the committee working on the project.  You can select the project that most interests you.  The table choices are:

WCM's 2019-2020 Legislative Priorities
(Public Policy Committee, Chair Jake Timm, Oshkosh)

Developing Community Media Promos
(Marketing Subcommittee, Chair:  John Kelly, Trempealeau)

Carrying our Message to Legislators
(Membership Committee, Chair:  Tom Loucks, Wisconsin Rapids)

Reviewing WCM's New Website
(Communications & Resources Committee, CoChair:  Derek Westby, Stoughton)

Developing the WCM Program Fund
(Ad Hoc 501c3 Committee, Chair:  Jeff Robbins, Sun Prairie)

At each table, the committee chair will talk in more detail about the project and then take questions and listen to feedback.  The goal is to create a setting that is conducive to brainstorming and idea generation. We want to know what you think, and we believe these small group discussions will be invaluable to our committees as they move forward on their projects.

After a period of time, we will come back together and discuss the best ideas that came out of the small group discussions.
